Some Typical Questions About Sleep Apnea Treatment

Learn More About Sleep Apnea
What does Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Mean?
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is more than just disrupted sleep—it can have widespread effects on your overall well-being. Common symptoms include loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, morning or frequent headaches, difficulty concentrating, and chronic fatigue. Risk factors such as obesity, enlarged tonsils, and nasal congestion can increase the likelihood of developing sleep apnea, however we see many people not in these risk categories. Over time, untreated sleep apnea can contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and an increased risk of stroke.
Snoring
Snoring occurs when airflow is obstructed during sleep, creating vibrations in the throat and nasal passages. While often considered harmless, chronic snoring can disrupt sleep quality and is frequently linked to sleep apnea. If an underlying anatomical issue is suspected, we may refer patients to an ENT specialist for further evaluation and management.
Insomnia
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing restful sleep. Poor sleep quality can lead to excessive daytime fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. Insomnia can have many contributing factors, including stress, anxiety, and medical conditions, all of which will be assessed during your visit. Treatment options may include behavioral therapy, lifestyle modifications, and, in some cases, sleep aid medications.
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
Restless Leg Syndrome is a neurological disorder that causes an overwhelming urge to move the legs, often accompanied by uncomfortable sensations such as itching, tingling, or crawling feelings. Symptoms typically worsen at night, making it difficult to fall and stay asleep. Certain medications can increase the risk of developing RLS, and identifying potential triggers is an important step in managing the condition.
Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a neurological sleep disorder that disrupts the body’s ability to regulate sleep-wake cycles. Symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness, sudden muscle weakness or loss of control (cataplexy), hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. If narcolepsy is suspected, we will coordinate a specialized sleep study for diagnosis and develop a personalized treatment plan to help manage symptoms effectively.
